Dawn’s rising bids my loving impulse prove.
Resolve rises in the face of frequent failings,
A firm felt purpose, my love’s unveilings.
By word and gesture, seize your sense to move.
But brutal do my efforts fall around us,
My purpose blunted by descent to rage,
My lesser angels burst fragile cage.
The taste of pride o’re passion now surround us.
So down, down with bruised, broken wings,
I fall from what we both so much desire.
In place of mounting passion finding hurtful fire.
The ashes of our past, most pleasing things.
Help me rend asunder this bursting pride
That pushes me to first and you to next.
May better angels keep you in my sight,
So, now, again, I feel you ever at my side,
My soul, my light, however often vexed.
My light, my life, I love with all my might!
